Sex coaching is not mental health therapy and has some distinctions to sex therapy. Here are some things that make sex coaching distinctly different from mental health counseling:
Sex therapy is most commonly associated with and treated as a niche within the mental health field. Most professionals who call themselves "sex therapists" are licensed mental health professionals who have completed specific sex therapy training in the field of human sexuality.
But a sex coach is different.
A sex coach is not a mental health professional. A sex coach is someone who provides coaching, guidance, education, and experiential support for client struggling with an array of sexual challenges.
Where a sex therapist will mostly focus on helping their clients talk about their sexual problems, a sex coach will incorporate more experiential learning, education, and practices aimed at providing a solution to a specific sexual problem or concern.
Sex coaches often have different type of training than a sex therapist.
For one, they do not usually have masters degrees in counseling or other mental health related fields. Unless a sex coach is also a licensed mental health professional, they aren't qualified to diagnose or treat mental health issues.
Most sex coaching programs are certification programs and therefore are not associated with any sort of state licensing board.
The benefit to this is that a sex coach can usually work with a client in ways that a licensed sex therapist cannot. A sex coach has more liberty and freedom in how they work with clients because they are not governed by a state licensing board.
This does not mean sex coaches are held to lower standards than a sex therapist. Reputable sex coaching organizations and certification programs have the same high ethical and training standards just like mental health professionals.
Sex coaches are also not limited geographically to one particular state like licensed mental health professionals. They can work with anyone in any location around the world while a licensed mental health professional can only work with clients in the state in which he or he is licensed.
Sex coaching tends to be more solution focused and based on the coach creating effective learning environments for the client rather than mainly talking about the problem as often found in most sex therapy approaches.
Somatic sex therapy is an approach that blends both this experiential and educational sex coaching approach with aspects of sex therapy and talk therapy by incorporating experiential practices into the treatment process.
